Reducing Holiday Stress: Say “No” to Get to “Yes,” Plus 2 Days Left   Leave a comment

Dear Friends,

Do you find it easy to say “Yes,” to others’ requests, but hard to say “Yes” to yourself?

Do you have a vision or intention for how to spend your holidays, but get hijacked by requests that you have a hard time saying “No” to?

The holidays can be a time of joy and cheer, as well as elicit feelings of stress and pressure.

While we may enjoy all that the holidays offer as we attend parties and other events; decorate our homes; shop for special gifts; visit friends and travel to see relatives and; make our favorite holiday recipes, among other festivities, we can also feel stretched and experience a strain on our time, energy, and financial reserves.

We may rationalize our decision to forgo our own needs, because we don’t want to offend our friends and family members, or risk disapproval from those we love or value.

But saying “No” provides an opportunity for others to grow, and care for themselves, and respect your personal needs.

Here are seven tips, and related questions, to help you gain clarity and take care of yourself this holiday season:

1. Take Inventory

– When are you saying “Yes” when you would rather say “No?”

– Are there particular circumstances or people who present a challenge?

2.  Be Mindful

– How does it feel in your body when you say “Yes” instead of “No?”

– Pay attention to stress and tension.

3.  Is what you fear will happen really true?

– How do you know?

– Is what you’re afraid of happening absolutely true?

– Regardless of what has happened in the past, this is a new moment.

– How can you take care of yourself if what you’re afraid of actually happens?

4.  What is saying “Yes” costing you?

– Are you tired and forfeiting rest?

– Do you have the financial resources to travel or buy expensive presents?

– Do you want to attend the events you’ve been invited to, or go out of obligation and later feel angry or resentful?

– What other costs might there be?

5.  Are you willing to pay the price?

– If you’re answer is “Yes,” do so with awareness. What will the payoffs be?

– If your answer is “No,” what could you do instead” (See #6 below)

6.  Saying “No” takes practice

– If you’re feeling nervous about expressing yourself, you may find it helpful to write down what it is you want to say.

– Then practice with a friend, a coach, or even in the mirror!

7.  Moving Forward

– What qualities do you need to grow inside yourself in order to feel comfortable setting healthy boundaries?

– Reflect on a time you were presented with a challenge and took care of yourself by setting a healthy boundary.

– Notice how the positive sensations feel in your body, and let the feelings flow through you.

– You can also think about how you felt – perhaps you felt a sense of confidence, or felt secure or empowered.

– Let the good feelings soak in as you stay with the experience for five to 20 seconds.

As always, I would love to hear from you.

With love,

Theresa

The Good, The Bad and The Possibilities   Leave a comment

Preamble

One never knows where one’s treasures lie! Like my experience on the highway last Sunday, or the man in the photo searching for hidden treasure on the beach (see my Facebook page for photo), it may be beneath your very feet.

Wednesday’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) The Good, The Bad and The Possibilities

I was driving home from “The Island” (as in Long Island) last Sunday after spending a lovely day at the ocean. About a half-mile from my exit, I was hit from behind by a woman driving a Mini-Cooper (love the car, not the hit). I’ve been experiencing neck and should pain, and to my surprise, have felt traumatized by the accident.

New York is a “no-fault” insurance state, which means that my personal car insurance  pays for any medical bills associated with the accident, rather than billing the person responsible. No problem, until spending hours on the phone yesterday trying to find alternative healthcare providers (chiropractors, etc.) who take the insurance. A few tears later, I got a recommendation from a friend for a chiropractor whose office is fairly close to my apartment.  Turns out, he helped me redesign a visualization I created to improve my heart health and bone density during our conversation and may have referrals than can benefit me. Life is filled with possibilities!

Next time something seems to go awry, look beyond the obvious. There may be hidden treasure waiting there.

With love,

Theresa

Wednesday’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool): Reconnecting To You   Leave a comment

Wednesday’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool): Reconnecting To You

On Monday’s Facebook post, I promised to write a TNT on self-appreciation. I’ve titled it “Reconnecting To You,” as reconnecting to who you are is the ultimate way to appreciate yourself.

How do you reconnect if you don’t know how to do it? Here are a couple of suggestions:

  • For the next week, write five things you like (and appreciate!) about yourself in your journal.  Don’t rush. Savor the experience. Take time to absorb the good feelings that your list conjures up. Make it a daily practice.
  • Make a list of of 10 more activities you enjoy doing. Examples include reading, walks in nature, knitting, gardening, listening to music, singing, meditating, etc. Then take 10 minutes (or more!) every day for the next week to do one thing on your list.

Self-appreciation sometimes takes practice. Your worth it! Gift yourself with at least 10 minutes every day to reconnect to you and appreciate yourself.

Have other suggestions? Would love to hear them! Post your comments on my Facebook page!  http://goo.gl/wiQofc

Me? I like taking photos!

With love,
Theresa

Embracing the Light, Plus Live Coaching Event   Leave a comment

 Preamble

This week’s blog continues with the theme of change – those we wish to make, and those aspects of our lives that remind us that there are places within us in need of discovery and growth. Like buds that push through the ground in spring, we have an opportunity to emerge from the darkness of winter, embrace the Light and dream again.

If would like a little daily inspiration, visit my Facebook page, where you’ll find tips and tools, inspirational messages, educational articles, and more. (Tip: Click “Like” at the top of the page to receive the posts.) http://goo.gl/wiQofc

And, if you live in New York, or will be visiting the area, stop by The Red Pipe Cafe, located in Forest Hills, on Saturday, May 23rd for my upcoming Coffee and Coaching Event.  You can find more information about the event in the Announcements section at the end of the blog.

EMBRACING THE LIGHT

“You may have suffered a setback, but don’t sit around in self-pity. Tell your heart to beat again. Tell your heart to love again…Tell your heart to forgive again. Maybe a dream didn’t work out, but nothing will change if you just expect more of the same. Tell your heart to dream again.”               –  Joel Osteen

Making big changes (or even little ones!) can be daunting! Fear of the unknown is a biggie that affects all of us in varying degrees, and at different points in our lives. The question is: are you willing to stay stuck and let it stop you or are you ready to take steps to break free?

We move at our own pace. Some of us are turtles. We move slowly, wear protective shells and retreat when we sense danger or need time to evaluate. Others of us are like gazelles that spring forward and move at lightening speeds. The good news is  how quickly we move doesn’t matter. It’s taking consistent steps toward the lives we desire that make for lasting change.

Fear of uncertainty can tempt me to stop dead in my tracks and cause my imagination to run rampant, creating all kinds of commotion no man (or woman!) in his right mind would want to embark on, let alone make him want to leap into the void!

“What if’s…” are two little words that are enough to halt the cosmos and are huge dream stoppers, when we use them against, rather than for ourselves. Like a child that wakes in the night from a scary dream afraid of monsters, and whose parent turns on the light, the fear disappears when we wake up and discover there’s nothing there but the filters of our imaginations.

What helps each of us turn on the Light is unique to who we are and what fits us best in the moment. For me, it may be reading something inspirational, prayer, a walk in nature, meditation, reciting an affirmation or a call to a support person or friend. But the most helpful of all is surrender – letting go of fears and doubts, confusion and speculation, so I can reconnect to who I am and hear the voice of my intuition. Whatever the tools, we use them to remind us of who we are and that life is ours for the asking.

There may be times we retreat, or feel like we’re moving in reverse, but the opposite is true. We never stop growing or go back in time – like the bulbs that lie dormant in winter and bloom in spring, we are destined to evolve and flourish.

If you would like a tool to help you let go, you may find the following exercise helpful. Use it as written or modify it to fit your personal style. However you use it, may it help you to prosper and grow as you embrace the Light within you.

An Exercise in Letting Go: Releasing Your Fears to the Light

The Universal Light Box

  1. You will need a covered container or box for the exercise; small pieces of paper that can easily fit in the box, or index cards cut in quarters; and a pen. I suggest using a container or box that you find beautiful and pleasing to look at. If desired, you can let your creative juices flow and decorate it.
  2. Next, write each of your fears or concerns on separate pieces of paper, and include the date. Place them in your Light Box. Keep it short. A sentence works perfectly.
  3. You can continue to add concerns or fears to your Light Box as often as needed.
  4. As you put each concern into your Light Box, imagine releasing it to the care of the Universe. You might like to say a few words or a special prayer to help you let go, such as “I now release all of my cares and concerns to the Light,” although it’s not necessary.
  5. Then take a breath, let go and trust that the Universe is working in your favor.
  6. Empty your Light Box every month or so. Remove the concerns that you have released or that have been resolved and return the ones you are still concerned about to your Light Box and continue with the exercise.

As always, I would love to hear your comments!

With love,

Theresa

Happy Mother’s Day to One and All! Quotes to Inspire.   Leave a comment

Preamble

Wishing a Happy Mother’s Day to all the mom’s out there! And, as we all give birth to ideas, dreams, and the lives we create, we are all mothering something!  I wish each and every one of you a happy, healthy, and joy-filled Mother’s Day! May you give birth to the gifts and talents you are here to share and treat them with loving care.

Happy Mother’s Day to One and All! Quotes to Inspire

“Hear Your Own Music.” – Dr. Eric Pearl

We all have special gifts and talents to share. So,in our own ways, we are part of the creation process, giving birth to new ideas through our words, our thoughts, our actions and imaginations. The things we create, whether tangible nor not, are like our children – and we must care for and nurture them in order for them to excel and grow.Whether we birth something tangible, that we can hold and touch, such as a baby, a book, a product, or birth something such as peace, love and gentleness, when we act from inspiration, our creations bring greater Light and Joy into the world and are part of our personal stories and missions. They feed us as much as, or more than, they feed and nourish the world. As I was sitting at The Red Pipe Cafe yesterday, in between coaching clients, I was inspired to include a few of my favorite quotes in this week’s blog. May they inspire your creations.
“Begin to practice taking small steps, doing the things you’ve avoided doing before, experiencing “little” risks and “little” adventures until your love of doing what you want and your experience at taking risks makes you confident enough that living your biggest dream is only one more “little” risky step.” – Barbara Sher
“Everyone has a purpose in life…a unique gift or special talent to give to others.
And when we blend this unique talent with service to others, we experience the ecstasy and exultation of our own spirit, which is the ultimate goal of all goals.” – Deepak Chopra”Success comes when you move unerringly forward, rejecting all that tends to distract you from your master plan.” – Catherine Ponder”Think of your work life, therefore, not as separate from your spiritual life, but as central to your spiritual life. Whatever your business, it is your ministry.” – Marianne WilliamsonAnd one of my own:
“What scares you can free you when you start taking steps to have what you truly desire.”

Wishing you a very happy, healthy, joy-filled Mother’s Day!  May all of your relations be filled with joy, peace, beauty and love.

7-Steps to Transform Your Future   6 comments

Preamble

Change takes place one step at a time.  As we change, we become a bigger blessing in the lives of others. This week’s blog outlines seven steps to show you how.

If you would like a little daily inspiration, visit my Facebook page, where you’ll find tips and tools, inspirational messages, educational articles, and more. (Tip: Click “Like” to receive the posts.)  http://goo.gl/wiQofc

 7-Steps to Transform Your Future

As you give thought to your future – your future that may be 10 years; your future that may be 5 years; or your future that is 60 days away – you literally begin pre-paving. And then, as you move into those pre-paved moments, and as that future becomes your present, you fine-tune it by saying,’This is what I now want.’ And all of those thoughts that you have put forth about your future, right down to this moment when you are now intending what action you want to take, will all fit together to bring you precisely that which you now want to live.” – Abraham

The changes we wish to make generally happen over time. Although we might like to jump from A-Z, there are usually a few steps we need to attend to in-between.

  1. We need to know what we want.
  2. We need to believe that we can have what we want.
  3. We need to get out of our own way by identifying and releasing the blocks that may be standing in the way of our success.
  4. We need to be willing to grow. Change inevitably calls for expanding our comfort zones.
  5. We need to follow through and take actions that move us in the direction we wish to go.
  6. We need people who believe in us and support us when the going gets tough.
  7. We may need to learn new skills or develop the ones we have in order to reach the level of expertise required to create the lives we love.

As we change and grow, we become a bigger blessing to others. Our lives serve to inspire those who witness our transformation and allow for new levels of healing and fulfillment for all concerned, ourselves included.

Do you know what you want? If not, think back on the things that have brought you joy and pleasure and begin to do them. Then, affirm that you deserve to have a life you love. Be willing to grow, and take inspired actions. Seek out people who will champion you so you can soar to new levels of joy and fulfillment, and discover what you need to learn or know in order to realize your dreams and goals.

Affirmation:  I know what I want and have the courage required to move forward.

Need Support?

It would be my pleasure to speak with you.

Your Divine Destiny   Leave a comment

 Preamble

One of my favorite books is “It’s Your Time,” by Joel Osteen. It is filled with inspirational messages that remind us that we all have a Divine Destiny waiting for us to say “Yes” and answer the Call.

Your Divine Destiny

“Too often we procrastinate or we allow negative thoughts and self-doubt to discourage us from chasing our dreams. As a result our gifts go undeveloped. Sometimes, we allow disappointments and failures to steal our confidence, and again, our treasures remain buried. Insecurities and low self-esteem can convince us that we have nothing special to offer.” Joel Osteen

We all have gifts, talents and abilities within us. Like the seed that contains all that it needs to grow into a beautiful tree, so do we have all that we need within us to give birth to our dreams. But just as the seed needs to be planted in the earth and requires the sun and rain to flourish, so we do need to plant our dreams in the fertile soil of our minds and say “yes” to the Call. Getting started is often the most difficult part of the journey.

It all begins with a desire, followed a the decision to say “yes” to something new, to change, to greater health, happiness and fulfillment – in whatever form resonates with you: a relationship, a new career, a new life path or direction. Then it’s up to you to follow the inspiration and guidance you receive. It may come in the form of a phone call, an offer, a book title, or an unexpected synchronicity. Stay open to the message and trust the guidance you receive. The more you act on it, the more will be revealed. And the more the seeds of your Divine Destiny will flourish.

If you need support in identifying your greatest dreams and goals, it is my pleasure to offer you an    Introductory Coaching Session. We will get acquainted, discuss your goals and see if might work well together.  To schedule your complimentary coaching session, email Theresa@reconnecting2you.com. I look forward to hearing from you.
