Reducing Holiday Stress: Say “No” to Get to “Yes,” Plus 2 Days Left   Leave a comment

Dear Friends,

Do you find it easy to say “Yes,” to others’ requests, but hard to say “Yes” to yourself?

Do you have a vision or intention for how to spend your holidays, but get hijacked by requests that you have a hard time saying “No” to?

The holidays can be a time of joy and cheer, as well as elicit feelings of stress and pressure.

While we may enjoy all that the holidays offer as we attend parties and other events; decorate our homes; shop for special gifts; visit friends and travel to see relatives and; make our favorite holiday recipes, among other festivities, we can also feel stretched and experience a strain on our time, energy, and financial reserves.

We may rationalize our decision to forgo our own needs, because we don’t want to offend our friends and family members, or risk disapproval from those we love or value.

But saying “No” provides an opportunity for others to grow, and care for themselves, and respect your personal needs.

Here are seven tips, and related questions, to help you gain clarity and take care of yourself this holiday season:

1. Take Inventory

– When are you saying “Yes” when you would rather say “No?”

– Are there particular circumstances or people who present a challenge?

2.  Be Mindful

– How does it feel in your body when you say “Yes” instead of “No?”

– Pay attention to stress and tension.

3.  Is what you fear will happen really true?

– How do you know?

– Is what you’re afraid of happening absolutely true?

– Regardless of what has happened in the past, this is a new moment.

– How can you take care of yourself if what you’re afraid of actually happens?

4.  What is saying “Yes” costing you?

– Are you tired and forfeiting rest?

– Do you have the financial resources to travel or buy expensive presents?

– Do you want to attend the events you’ve been invited to, or go out of obligation and later feel angry or resentful?

– What other costs might there be?

5.  Are you willing to pay the price?

– If you’re answer is “Yes,” do so with awareness. What will the payoffs be?

– If your answer is “No,” what could you do instead” (See #6 below)

6.  Saying “No” takes practice

– If you’re feeling nervous about expressing yourself, you may find it helpful to write down what it is you want to say.

– Then practice with a friend, a coach, or even in the mirror!

7.  Moving Forward

– What qualities do you need to grow inside yourself in order to feel comfortable setting healthy boundaries?

– Reflect on a time you were presented with a challenge and took care of yourself by setting a healthy boundary.

– Notice how the positive sensations feel in your body, and let the feelings flow through you.

– You can also think about how you felt – perhaps you felt a sense of confidence, or felt secure or empowered.

– Let the good feelings soak in as you stay with the experience for five to 20 seconds.

As always, I would love to hear from you.

With love,

Theresa

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Making Life Changes   Leave a comment

Most of us are in the process of change. Change can elicit a variety of feelings, which can either prompt us to move forward or keep us feeling anxious and stuck. Whether our desired changes are “large” or “small,” we may hesitate to implement them.

You may feel excited, exhilarated, scared, apprehensive, or may be experiencing a combination of feelings as you consider your desired change. Here are several questions that will help you clarify your process and muster the confidence and courage to move forward:

  1. What have you always wanted to do, but are afraid of doing?
  2. What would be the benefit of making your desired change?
  3. What beliefs, ideas or feelings are holding you back from making the desired change?
  4. What is the payoff for maintaining the status quo?
  5. How would your life be different if you were make the desired change?
  6. On a scale from 1 – 10, (10 is the highest), how committed are you to making this change?
  7. What means of support, or other factors, do you need to have in place in order to make the desired change?
  8. What is one step you could take this week to move forward?

If you would like support moving forward on your path, it would be my pleasure to speak with you.

Wednesday’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool): Thinking Outside of the Box   Leave a comment

Preamble

Are you stuck in a grind? Tired of struggling, but not sure what to do? Then it’s time to step outside of the box and try something new.

Wednesday’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool): Thinking Outside of the Box

I am firm believer in listening to my intuition. In my personal life, and in my work as a healer and coach, I know that we all have access to the information we need when we are willing to step out of the box and listen.

Let’s face it – change can be scary. It requires that we muster our courage and take a leap of faith. Wanting to know the results of our actions, before we take them, or requiring a guarantee can, (and does), limit our options and keeps us stuck. It’s been true for me, at least temporarily, and is something we have all experienced. Despite our best intentions, it sometimes takes enormous pain before we’re ready to move forward and take the steps that lead to change and sets us free. How long we’re willing to wait is up to each of us.  But there’s one thing that’s certain: doing the same thing, over and over again, will yield the same results.

The following exercise will provide some insights to help you:

Close your eyes and think of a stressful situation or something that’s been troubling you. It may be a relationship, pressures at work, a financial dilemma or other situation. Then imagine that someone you look up to – a mentor, a teacher, a friend, or even a fictional character that you admire, is standing in front of you. Take a moment to connect, then ask them what advice they have for you. The information may come in the form of a short answer, an impression, a feeling or image. If it’s your intuition speaking, it will feel certain and right and be non-judgmental.  Make note of your answers. Then choose an action to implement that resonates with you and set a specific time frame in which you will do it. When complete, record your experience.

As always, I would love to hear about your experience.

With love,
Theresa

Wednesday’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool): Soul Food   Leave a comment

Preamble

As I am writing this week’s TNT I am reminded of the 12-Step prayer:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.

Wishing us all the courage to change the behaviors and patterns that do not nurture us, that we may have greater health, happiness and fulfillment.

On that note, if you live in New York, or plan to be in the area next Tuesday, please take a look in the Announcements section to learn about a free workshop I will be facilitating on Life Balance at the Leonard Branch Library in Brooklyn, NY. I would love to have you join me!

Wednesday’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool):  Soul Food

Just like everything on the earth needs water and sunshine to grow, so too do we need food that nourishes our souls that we may awaken to greater health, happiness and fulfillment.

Life can seem tedious and unsatisfying when filled with “to do’s” and void of activities and ways of being that nurture us.

I have been focused on addressing health issues for the last several months and have decided I need more fun in order to restore a sense of harmony and balance to my own life. I love dancing and have committed to dancing to two Zydeco songs in my dining room every day for the next seven days.

If you feel a need for greater balance in your life, I invite you to choose an an activity that nurtures you – perhaps one that you’ve laid aside because you believed you haven’t had time or energy to enjoy it.  Then, make a commitment to spend whatever period of time feels right to you for at least three times during the next week. Notice any changes in how you feel emotionally, spiritually, physically and mentally.  Then, if it feels right to you, make it a habit or experiment with something new that pleases you.

Regain your sense of balance.

As always, would love to know how it goes!

With love,

Theresa

Fulfilling Your Personal Legend   Leave a comment

Dear Friends,

I was recently invited to submit an article for Mind Mastery, a forum in the U.K. facilitated by a fellow coach and Gestalt Therapist, whose mission is to promote human development. It was fun to write – one of those pieces that seemed to write itself. I thought you might enjoy it! Here’s a taste, followed by the link:

Fulfilling Your Personal Legend

Life holds many possibilities. When we allow our dreams to take root, and nourish them with our actions, we expand into new horizons and create our personal destinies.

“Our destiny is not mapped out for us by some exterior power; we map it out for ourselves. What we think and do in the present determines what shall happen in the future.” – Christian D. Larson

Now is the Time   Leave a comment

Now is the time. I’ve been hearing this message consistently for more than two years now, and am finally beginning to discover what it means to me. As you read this weeks post, you may find that it has meaning for you, as well.

Now is the Time

“We are in a civil rights movement of the soul.” – Neale Diamond Walsch

Okay, maybe I am a slow learner, but I have finally begun to understand the meaning of those four little words: “Now is the Time.”

It began when I was in Torino Italy over two years for a month-long visit (which unexpectedly turned into four!)

I had gone to Torino to visit friends and explore the possibility of living there. Yes, a big, bold leap. I had spent four days in Torino the previous year, and wanted to explore it further. But before I made the move there were several things I wanted to know: Could I make a living with my healing and coaching practice when I had limited Italian language skills? Would I make friends? Would I be content? Would there be enough to do? (After all, I spent 10 years living in New York City, and Torino was much smaller.)

I arrived the weekend of the Torino Jazz Festival. What a treat, indeed! I made friends that very day with a fellow Reconnective Healing Practitioner, and began a wonderful four-month journey. Everything was flow smoothly. I had seven Reconnective Healing clients within the space of a month (two who brought translators), was making friends, going to dances, learning to cook, touring the countryside, and having  a ball. Aside from a brief period of anxiety when deciding whether to extend my trip, and if so, where I wold stay, I felt in complete harmony and alignment with life, and was living in the flow.

To add another dimension (literally!) one night, while in a deep sleep, I had a visitation by  none other than the Fab Four. There they were.  John. Paul. George and Ringo, performing life in concert, just for me. Not only did they gift me with a private show, they created the lyrics and music to an original composition in my honor. The title? “Now’s the Time.” (OMG. I can see them as clearly as they appeared to me over two years ago, dressed in black suits, thin ties, and  “moppy” hair. Like they looked when they appeared on the Ed Sullivan show! Do you remember?)

Although I loved my time in Torino, and the people I met, I wasn’t 100% sure that it was ‘my landing spot.” I was also concerned about the high tax rate (up to 70% for business owners!) the state of the economy, the bureaucracy, and other issues, and was at odds about where in the world to live, as it was never my intention to remain in New York permanently. And, as I work remotely, through Skype and telephone, I have the ability to live and work anywhere.

Since I returned to the U.S. “Now is the Time” has appeared everywhere: in magazine articles, on billboards, in train station advertisements, in books, on radio broadcasts, and as book titles. And although the Beatles haven’t, as yet, performed an encore since that original composition, I have even seen the message in my dreams. “Now is the Time” has been following me everywhere.

Today was the capper. Someone, who I’ll call John, sang an original composition at my spiritual center. John had gone through his own dark night in search of a dream he wasn’t so sure would occur. As with all dreams, we go through periods of doubt, are tempted to hold back, and are sometimes challenged to believe that our dreams will actually come true. The song he sang? You’ve got it! “Now’s the Time.” (How much more confirmation does one need?) John happily announced that he was accepted to the college of his choice and will going to Spain in the fall to fulfill his dream of studying music. How he will cover the expenses is yet to be revealed, but he is confident this too shall come to pass, as he moves forward on his path.

As for me, here are a free things I have discovered over the last few weeks about what “Now is the Time,” means to me:

* For the last several years, I’ve been dreaming of taking an extended trip to Washington State to visit my son. When? Now’s the time! I will be leaving in July for month-long visit.

* I’ve had dreams of returning to Italy, but wasn’t sure how, where or when. After consulting with two experts in relocation astrology, I’ve decided to back and explore several new areas. When? Now’s the time! I will be leaving in September for a visit.

Most importantly, I have come to realize that now is the time. It’s the only time there is. It’s all we’ve got. As Robert F. Kennedy asked: “If not now, when?”

What prompted the exploration of moving to Italy in the first place began when I asked myself the question: “When lying on my deathbed, what would I regret not having done?” The answer? Not fulfilling my childhood dreams to travel and live outside of the U.S., and not creating enough time to mend a relationship with my adult son.

We all have dreams. We are all tempted, on occasion to let the fear of uncertainty hold us back. What are you waiting for? Is now your time?

If you are ready to take the next step in your life, it would be a joy and a privilege to work with you. To learn more, or to schedule a free-30 minute consultation to explore how we might work together, please email Theresa@reconnecting2you.com.

Richest blessings,

Theresa

Vulnerability: The Courage to Be   Leave a comment

Preamble

Hmm….vulnerability. A topic we don’t normally discuss or hear much about, except in the derogatory. Yet, it is a quality that makes us real, allows us to heal as we face our true feelings and fears, and moves us in to a deeper connection with ourselves, our loved ones, and with life. To read more and to listen to an inspiring talk on vulnerability by Brene Brown, see below.

I look forward to seeing you there!

Vulnerability: The Courage to Be

“Vulnerability [is] the Birthplace of Love.”
-Brene Brown

I just finished listening to a 20-minute TED talk by Brene Brown entitled “The Power of Vulnerability.” (Click on the link below to listen).

When in fear, the last thing we want to feel is vulnerable. Yet, when our hearts are open, and we let go of judging ourselves and our concerns for how others may see us, vulnerability is the key that helps us muster the courage to swing wide the door, and beckons us to become more of who we are.

The experience must just surprise you.

I invite you to sit back, get comfortable, and listen to Brene’s talk. I wold love to hear your thoughts.
