Reducing Holiday Stress: Say “No” to Get to “Yes,” Plus 2 Days Left   Leave a comment

Dear Friends,

Do you find it easy to say “Yes,” to others’ requests, but hard to say “Yes” to yourself?

Do you have a vision or intention for how to spend your holidays, but get hijacked by requests that you have a hard time saying “No” to?

The holidays can be a time of joy and cheer, as well as elicit feelings of stress and pressure.

While we may enjoy all that the holidays offer as we attend parties and other events; decorate our homes; shop for special gifts; visit friends and travel to see relatives and; make our favorite holiday recipes, among other festivities, we can also feel stretched and experience a strain on our time, energy, and financial reserves.

We may rationalize our decision to forgo our own needs, because we don’t want to offend our friends and family members, or risk disapproval from those we love or value.

But saying “No” provides an opportunity for others to grow, and care for themselves, and respect your personal needs.

Here are seven tips, and related questions, to help you gain clarity and take care of yourself this holiday season:

1. Take Inventory

– When are you saying “Yes” when you would rather say “No?”

– Are there particular circumstances or people who present a challenge?

2.  Be Mindful

– How does it feel in your body when you say “Yes” instead of “No?”

– Pay attention to stress and tension.

3.  Is what you fear will happen really true?

– How do you know?

– Is what you’re afraid of happening absolutely true?

– Regardless of what has happened in the past, this is a new moment.

– How can you take care of yourself if what you’re afraid of actually happens?

4.  What is saying “Yes” costing you?

– Are you tired and forfeiting rest?

– Do you have the financial resources to travel or buy expensive presents?

– Do you want to attend the events you’ve been invited to, or go out of obligation and later feel angry or resentful?

– What other costs might there be?

5.  Are you willing to pay the price?

– If you’re answer is “Yes,” do so with awareness. What will the payoffs be?

– If your answer is “No,” what could you do instead” (See #6 below)

6.  Saying “No” takes practice

– If you’re feeling nervous about expressing yourself, you may find it helpful to write down what it is you want to say.

– Then practice with a friend, a coach, or even in the mirror!

7.  Moving Forward

– What qualities do you need to grow inside yourself in order to feel comfortable setting healthy boundaries?

– Reflect on a time you were presented with a challenge and took care of yourself by setting a healthy boundary.

– Notice how the positive sensations feel in your body, and let the feelings flow through you.

– You can also think about how you felt – perhaps you felt a sense of confidence, or felt secure or empowered.

– Let the good feelings soak in as you stay with the experience for five to 20 seconds.

As always, I would love to hear from you.

With love,

Theresa

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Generosity   Leave a comment

“We are not held back by the love we didn’t receive in the past, but by the love we are not extending in the present.” – Marianne Williamson

Life constantly shows us our level of generosity.  We may experience a sense of lack and limitation, or feel generous and abundant, all within the same set of circumstances. Our responses depend upon our beliefs and perceptions, at any given moment. The good news is, the more aware we are of our reactions and behaviors, the more at choice we are to change.

Withholding love in all its forms is painful. It stems from fear and gets in the way of giving and receiving, which is our natural state of being. Withholding love can show up in myriad ways: we may feel anger or resentful; jealous or inferior; judgmental or confused; greedy or deprived; selfish or unkind; or experience numerous other emotions! Paradoxically, the more we give, the more bountiful our lives – when done with kindness and magnanimity.

If you would like to experience greater love and abundance in your life, extend your generosity!

This Weeks TNT:

Notice the places you hold back from giving. It may be as simple as not loaning a stranger your pen! Or not sharing your time, resources or experience.

Do the same with receiving. Notice how open you are to accept the generosity of others.

Be aware of how you feel in your body.  Are you comfortable with giving and receiving? Or do you feel tense and uneasy? Notice how you feel without judgment, to the degree that you are able.

If you would like to increase your level of generosity, ask yourself how you would like to feel and what you would like to do when given the opportunity to do it. You most certainly will have another chance! Little by little, you will expand your capacity!

As always, I would love to hear your experience and comments.

With love, Theresa

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Opportunities In Disguise   Leave a comment

“Do you truly know what is positive and what is negative? Do you have the total picture?

There have been many people for whom limitation, failure, loss, illness or pain, in whatever form, turned out to be their greatest teacher.”  – Eckhart Tolle

I often heard inmates at the Washington State Reformatory tell me, when I was facilitating a monthly self-help group at the prison, that being incarcerated helped them turn their lives around. It deeply touched my heart.  Many of them were so creative: artists, poets, songwriters, healers. It made me reflect on how, underneath our choices, behaviors, and attitudes, lies something beautiful and sacred within each of us. We may simply lose sight of it and need a catalyst to reconnect us to the Truth of who we are.

The Reformatory, located in Monroe, WA, is a maximum security facility. Most of the men who attended my groups, or whom I met at my colleagues programs, had been doing time for 10 to 20 years, if not more. Yet, they were experiencing a degree of freedom they hadn’t known when living on the outside. What it showed me was that…

Sometimes, what appears to be a failure or challenge is an opportunity in disguise.

Are you struggling with a situation or challenge that is causing pain or grief?  Try looking beyond the obvious.

Sit quietly and ask yourself:

“What opportunities are available to me now?”

“What is Life wanting to tell me?”

“How am I needing to grow?”

Write the questions in your journal and let the answers flow.

As always, I would love to hear your comments.

With love, Theresa

Embracing the Light, Plus Live Coaching Event   Leave a comment

 Preamble

This week’s blog continues with the theme of change – those we wish to make, and those aspects of our lives that remind us that there are places within us in need of discovery and growth. Like buds that push through the ground in spring, we have an opportunity to emerge from the darkness of winter, embrace the Light and dream again.

If would like a little daily inspiration, visit my Facebook page, where you’ll find tips and tools, inspirational messages, educational articles, and more. (Tip: Click “Like” at the top of the page to receive the posts.) http://goo.gl/wiQofc

And, if you live in New York, or will be visiting the area, stop by The Red Pipe Cafe, located in Forest Hills, on Saturday, May 23rd for my upcoming Coffee and Coaching Event.  You can find more information about the event in the Announcements section at the end of the blog.

EMBRACING THE LIGHT

“You may have suffered a setback, but don’t sit around in self-pity. Tell your heart to beat again. Tell your heart to love again…Tell your heart to forgive again. Maybe a dream didn’t work out, but nothing will change if you just expect more of the same. Tell your heart to dream again.”               –  Joel Osteen

Making big changes (or even little ones!) can be daunting! Fear of the unknown is a biggie that affects all of us in varying degrees, and at different points in our lives. The question is: are you willing to stay stuck and let it stop you or are you ready to take steps to break free?

We move at our own pace. Some of us are turtles. We move slowly, wear protective shells and retreat when we sense danger or need time to evaluate. Others of us are like gazelles that spring forward and move at lightening speeds. The good news is  how quickly we move doesn’t matter. It’s taking consistent steps toward the lives we desire that make for lasting change.

Fear of uncertainty can tempt me to stop dead in my tracks and cause my imagination to run rampant, creating all kinds of commotion no man (or woman!) in his right mind would want to embark on, let alone make him want to leap into the void!

“What if’s…” are two little words that are enough to halt the cosmos and are huge dream stoppers, when we use them against, rather than for ourselves. Like a child that wakes in the night from a scary dream afraid of monsters, and whose parent turns on the light, the fear disappears when we wake up and discover there’s nothing there but the filters of our imaginations.

What helps each of us turn on the Light is unique to who we are and what fits us best in the moment. For me, it may be reading something inspirational, prayer, a walk in nature, meditation, reciting an affirmation or a call to a support person or friend. But the most helpful of all is surrender – letting go of fears and doubts, confusion and speculation, so I can reconnect to who I am and hear the voice of my intuition. Whatever the tools, we use them to remind us of who we are and that life is ours for the asking.

There may be times we retreat, or feel like we’re moving in reverse, but the opposite is true. We never stop growing or go back in time – like the bulbs that lie dormant in winter and bloom in spring, we are destined to evolve and flourish.

If you would like a tool to help you let go, you may find the following exercise helpful. Use it as written or modify it to fit your personal style. However you use it, may it help you to prosper and grow as you embrace the Light within you.

An Exercise in Letting Go: Releasing Your Fears to the Light

The Universal Light Box

  1. You will need a covered container or box for the exercise; small pieces of paper that can easily fit in the box, or index cards cut in quarters; and a pen. I suggest using a container or box that you find beautiful and pleasing to look at. If desired, you can let your creative juices flow and decorate it.
  2. Next, write each of your fears or concerns on separate pieces of paper, and include the date. Place them in your Light Box. Keep it short. A sentence works perfectly.
  3. You can continue to add concerns or fears to your Light Box as often as needed.
  4. As you put each concern into your Light Box, imagine releasing it to the care of the Universe. You might like to say a few words or a special prayer to help you let go, such as “I now release all of my cares and concerns to the Light,” although it’s not necessary.
  5. Then take a breath, let go and trust that the Universe is working in your favor.
  6. Empty your Light Box every month or so. Remove the concerns that you have released or that have been resolved and return the ones you are still concerned about to your Light Box and continue with the exercise.

As always, I would love to hear your comments!

With love,

Theresa

7-Steps to Transform Your Future   6 comments

Preamble

Change takes place one step at a time.  As we change, we become a bigger blessing in the lives of others. This week’s blog outlines seven steps to show you how.

 7-Steps to Transform Your Future

As you give thought to your future – your future that may be 10 years; your future that may be 5 years; or your future that is 60 days away – you literally begin pre-paving. And then, as you move into those pre-paved moments, and as that future becomes your present, you fine-tune it by saying,’This is what I now want.’ And all of those thoughts that you have put forth about your future, right down to this moment when you are now intending what action you want to take, will all fit together to bring you precisely that which you now want to live.” – Abraham

The changes we wish to make generally happen over time. Although we might like to jump from A-Z, there are usually a few steps we need to attend to in-between.

  1. We need to know what we want.
  2. We need to believe that we can have what we want.
  3. We need to get out of our own way by identifying and releasing the blocks that may be standing in the way of our success.
  4. We need to be willing to grow. Change inevitably calls for expanding our comfort zones.
  5. We need to follow through and take actions that move us in the direction we wish to go.
  6. We need people who believe in us and support us when the going gets tough.
  7. We may need to learn new skills or develop the ones we have in order to reach the level of expertise required to create the lives we love.

As we change and grow, we become a bigger blessing to others. Our lives serve to inspire those who witness our transformation and allow for new levels of healing and fulfillment for all concerned, ourselves included.

Do you know what you want? If not, think back on the things that have brought you joy and pleasure and begin to do them. Then, affirm that you deserve to have a life you love. Be willing to grow, and take inspired actions. Seek out people who will champion you so you can soar to new levels of joy and fulfillment, and discover what you need to learn or know in order to realize your dreams and goals.

Affirmation:  I know what I want and have the courage required to move forward.

Need Support?

It would be my pleasure to speak with you.

Now is the Time   Leave a comment

Now is the Time

“We are in a civil rights movement of the soul.” – Neale Diamond Walsch

Okay, maybe I am a slow learner, but I have finally begun to understand the meaning of those four little words: “Now is the Time.”

It began when I was in Torino Italy over two years for a month-long visit (which unexpectedly turned into four!)

I had gone to Torino to visit friends and explore the possibility of living there. Yes, a big, bold leap. I had spent four days in Torino the previous year, and wanted to explore it further. But before I made the move there were several things I wanted to know: Could I make a living with my healing and coaching practice when I had limited Italian language skills? Would I make friends? Would I be content? Would there be enough to do? (After all, I spent 10 years living in New York City, and Torino was much smaller.)

I arrived the weekend of the Torino Jazz Festival. What a treat, indeed! I made friends that very day with a fellow Reconnective Healing Practitioner, and began a wonderful four-month journey. Everything was flow smoothly. I had seven Reconnective Healing clients within the space of a month (two who brought translators), was making friends, going to dances, learning to cook, touring the countryside, and having  a ball. Aside from a brief period of anxiety when deciding whether to extend my trip, and if so, where I wold stay, I felt in complete harmony and alignment with life, and was living in the flow.

To add another dimension (literally!) one night, while in a deep sleep, I had a visitation by  none other than the Fab Four. There they were.  John. Paul. George and Ringo, performing life in concert, just for me. Not only did they gift me with a private show, they created the lyrics and music to an original composition in my honor. The title? “Now’s the Time.” (OMG. I can see them as clearly as they appeared to me over two years ago, dressed in black suits, thin ties, and  “moppy” hair. Like they looked when they appeared on the Ed Sullivan show! Do you remember?)

Although I loved my time in Torino, and the people I met, I wasn’t 100% sure that it was ‘my landing spot.” I was also concerned about the high tax rate (up to 70% for business owners!) the state of the economy, the bureaucracy, and other issues, and was at odds about where in the world to live, as it was never my intention to remain in New York permanently. And, as I work remotely, through Skype and telephone, I have the ability to live and work anywhere.

Since I returned to the U.S. “Now is the Time” has appeared everywhere: in magazine articles, on billboards, in train station advertisements, in books, on radio broadcasts, and as book titles. And although the Beatles haven’t, as yet, performed an encore since that original composition, I have even seen the message in my dreams. “Now is the Time” has been following me everywhere.

Today was the capper. Someone, who I’ll call John, sang an original composition at my spiritual center. John had gone through his own dark night in search of a dream he wasn’t so sure would occur. As with all dreams, we go through periods of doubt, are tempted to hold back, and are sometimes challenged to believe that our dreams will actually come true. The song he sang? You’ve got it! “Now’s the Time.” (How much more confirmation does one need?) John happily announced that he was accepted to the college of his choice and will going to Spain in the fall to fulfill his dream of studying music. How he will cover the expenses is yet to be revealed, but he is confident this too shall come to pass, as he moves forward on his path.

As for me, here are a free things I have discovered over the last few weeks about what “Now is the Time,” means to me:

* For the last several years, I’ve been dreaming of taking an extended trip to Washington State to visit my son. When? Now’s the time! I will be leaving in July for month-long visit.

* I’ve had dreams of returning to Italy, but wasn’t sure how, where or when. After consulting with two experts in relocation astrology, I’ve decided to back and explore several new areas. When? Now’s the time! I will be leaving in September for a visit.

Most importantly, I have come to realize that now is the time. It’s the only time there is. It’s all we’ve got. As Robert F. Kennedy asked: “If not now, when?”

What prompted the exploration of moving to Italy in the first place began when I asked myself the question: “When lying on my deathbed, what would I regret not having done?” The answer? Not fulfilling my childhood dreams to travel and live outside of the U.S., and not creating enough time to mend a relationship with my adult son.

We all have dreams. We are all tempted, on occasion to let the fear of uncertainty hold us back. What are you waiting for? Is now your time?

If you are ready to take the next step in your life, it would be a joy and a privilege to work with you. To learn more, or to schedule a free-30 minute consultation to explore how we might work together, please email Theresa@reconnecting2you.com.

Richest blessings,

Theresa

Walking the Camino: A Personal Journey   Leave a comment

“Nothing happens until something moves.” – Albert Einstein

I’ve done two things this weekend that were particularly powerful: one was seeing a documentary entitled “Walking the Camino,” about a 500-mile journey that begins at the border of France and stretches across Spain: a pilgrimage that millions of people have embarked on for thousands of years on the Camino de Santiago to reach the city of Santiago de Compostela. The other was an event at St. John the Divine, the largest Gothic church in the world, where I gathered with 1,800 people for The Interfaith Kirtan for World Peace.

Although two completely different events, both led me on an inward journey; a path of reflection and self-discovery.  The more powerful of the two was Walking the Camino, which follows six strangers as they attempt to cross an entire country on foot, each undergoing their own personal challenges and transformations along the 500-mile trail.

The Camino de Santiago is named for Santo Iago, or Saint James – one of the 12 Apostles and rumored brother of Jesus Christ. According to legend, his body was found in a boat that washed ashore in Northern Spain thousands of years ago. His remains were transported inland and were buried under what is now the grand Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, which marks the end of the Camino. His bones were rediscovered in the 9th century when a hermit saw a field of stars that led him to the ancient, forgotten tomb. (To learn more, click on the link at the end of the blog).

You don’t have to be religious or spiritual, to walk the Camino. In fact, several of the walkers featured in the film had no spiritual beliefs and did the walk with no particular intention in mind- they simply felt drawn to “do it” and followed the call.

As the walkers shared their stories about their experiences on the trail, and why they chose to do it, I felt moved to look at my own life and realized how similar our stories were: the need to control when frightened; learning how to trust when uncertain about a path or direction; the need to stop and rest when tired; how people who appear out of nowhere when help of one sort or another is needed; having friends support and care for us when wounded; our resiliency and the ability to pick ourselves up when we fall and stumble; the relationships we form with strangers who go on to become dear and beloved friends; times of laughter, tears, delight and joy, and the accomplishment of things we never thought possible.

As I watched the walkers face their personal pain – whether physical, emotional, spiritual – or a combination of all three, and celebrate their triumphs, it struck me how clearly live mirrors our inner environment and gives shape to our paths.

Whether we walk the Camino de Santiago or sit in the comfort of our living rooms, we too, are walking the Camino. When faced with obstacles we must decide whether to keep moving, stop and rest for a while, or recalculate and take a new route. Whichever we choose, life keeps nudging us forward, providing new options and opportunities that help us stretch and grow, face our fears, acknowledge our strengths, and reveal more of who we are.

To learn more about the Camino de Santiago:  www.caminodocumentary.org.

You can also rent The Way with Martin Sheen. It’s based on a true story of a grieving father whose son dies while hiking the Camino de Santiago. Looking for insights into his estranged child’s life, he decides to complete the 500-mile trek through Spain. A wonderful story filled with compassion, humor and our ability to move beyond our personal boundaries and connect.
