Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Focus on the Positive   Leave a comment

We all experience discouragement from time to time. The key, when in the midst of challenge, is learning to focus on the positive.

“If you keep saying things are going to be bad, you have a good chance of being a prophet.” – Isaac Bashevis Singer

It’s easy to feel frustrated when things don’t go our way, or take longer than we wish. We may become discouraged, and think that what we long for will never come to pass. Over time, if we don’t change the course of our thinking, the things we tell ourselves will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

If you would like a different outcome, and one that leads to your success, tell a different story, and shift your focus to your wins.

THIS WEEK’S TNT

Keep a journal of all that’s going well.

At the end of every day, add a daily entry.

It will help to change your focus and increase your happiness and energy.

Need some ideas? Here are a few to get you started:

You:

Caught an early bus, and made it to work on time!

Saw a friend you hadn’t seen in a while and enjoyed a lovely visit.

You saw a job posting in your field of interest, and filled out an application.

The sun was shining!

You took loving care of your body, and ate a nourishing meal.

You spoke up for yourself at a meeting.

Your car started!

Get the idea?

Experiment!

Try it for a month. Then, notice any changes in your outlook and your life.

It doesn’t matter how large or small the good things you notice are.

The benefits are yours to enjoy, and will come with daily practice.

With love, Theresa

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Stress Less. Charge Your Life   Leave a comment

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” George Bernard Shaw

Reducing your stress has the implications of strengthening your immune system and lowering your cortisol levels, which in turn reduces inflammation and improves your overall health.

I’ve been feeling a bit under the weather these last few days and have been coloring in one of the coloring books I purchased when I was in Barcelona for a week’s vacation last November. I flipped through the pages, found a design I liked by Joan Fabre’ I Oliver, and have been keeping the book on my living room counter, open to the page I’m coloring, to give me easy access. Each time I walk by, I take a peek, and when I feel inspired, stop for a minute or two or five and color another piece. I just finished coloring in the sides with Faber Castell’s Middle Purple Pink! When I finished the section, I stood for a moment and noticed how light, calm and healthy I felt.

We often think of reducing stress as a stressful thing to do – and something we have to work at. But what if we had a paradigm shift and saw stress as an opportunity to be more playful?

THIS WEEK’S TNT

Do something every day that makes you smile,  lights you up and brings a sense of joy and playfulness.

Then stop and notice how good you feel and let the positive sensations soak in.

Doing so on a regular basis will reduce your stress and improve your sense of happiness.

With love,

Theresa

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Grief   Leave a comment

“Some pain is simply the normal pain of human existence. That is the pain I try to make room for. I honor my grief.” –  Marianne Williamson

During times of loss – whether it be loss through the transition of someone we cared for and loved, loss of a job, a relationship, a financial downturn, or other situation, we are often told to move on before we are ready; to suck it up and lick our wounds. And if we don’t, we may lose friends or be told we’re too sensitive. But grief has a life of its own.

It’s easy to distract ourselves with work, food, television, or other activities, and; there may be times we need to step away and give ourselves a break. But denying our feelings and suppressing our emotions doesn’t make grief go away.

The five stages of grief, identified by Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, include:

  1. Denial
  2. Anger
  3. Bargaining
  4. Depression
  5. Acceptance

However, we do not move through them in a linear fashion, and they may arise when we least expect them. For instance, I recall walking into a supermarket several months after my mother died. I had been feeling fine, but broke into tears when I entered the store. I have no idea what brought it on, as I was living 3,000 miles away. I stopped and let the tears flow. A few minutes later the emotions passed and I continued to shop.

It’s being present with the process that allows us to heal.

I recall Stephen Levine, one of my dearest teachers, saying that even missing a phone call elicits a momentary experience of grief.

Today’s TNT:

If you’re experiencing loss, allow yourself to honor your grief.

Share your experience with a trusted friend.

Sit with your feelings.

Journal.

Join a grief support group

Trust your process.

Take the time you need.

As always, I would love to hear your comments.

With love, Theresa

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Opportunities In Disguise   Leave a comment

“Do you truly know what is positive and what is negative? Do you have the total picture?

There have been many people for whom limitation, failure, loss, illness or pain, in whatever form, turned out to be their greatest teacher.”  – Eckhart Tolle

I often heard inmates at the Washington State Reformatory tell me, when I was facilitating a monthly self-help group at the prison, that being incarcerated helped them turn their lives around. It deeply touched my heart.  Many of them were so creative: artists, poets, songwriters, healers. It made me reflect on how, underneath our choices, behaviors, and attitudes, lies something beautiful and sacred within each of us. We may simply lose sight of it and need a catalyst to reconnect us to the Truth of who we are.

The Reformatory, located in Monroe, WA, is a maximum security facility. Most of the men who attended my groups, or whom I met at my colleagues programs, had been doing time for 10 to 20 years, if not more. Yet, they were experiencing a degree of freedom they hadn’t known when living on the outside. What it showed me was that…

Sometimes, what appears to be a failure or challenge is an opportunity in disguise.

Are you struggling with a situation or challenge that is causing pain or grief?  Try looking beyond the obvious.

Sit quietly and ask yourself:

“What opportunities are available to me now?”

“What is Life wanting to tell me?”

“How am I needing to grow?”

Write the questions in your journal and let the answers flow.

As always, I would love to hear your comments.

With love, Theresa

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Appreciation: A Tool To Rewire Your Brain For Happiness   Leave a comment

Preamble

Much as been said about the power of gratitude and appreciation. That what we focus on, grows. The field of neuroscience is documenting what sages have known for millennia. Today’s TNT focuses on the art of appreciation – a tool that can help you shift from a negative state of mind to one that’s more satisfying and vibrant.

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Appreciation: A Tool To Rewire Your Brain For Happiness

“Neurons that fire together wire together.”  – Donald Hebb

The quote above was first used in 1949 by Donald Hebb, a Canadian neuropsychologist known for his work in the field of associative learning, and has become a common phrase among neuroscientists. Hebb’s axiom reminds us that every experience, thought, feeling, and physical sensation triggers thousands of neurons, which form a neural network. What’s cool about this, is that we now know how to transform our ‘negativity bias” (a survival skill we developed eons ago) in to a more positive state of mind. Science calls this a “positivity bias.”

By focusing on what we appreciate, we have the power and the ability to rewire our brains for happiness. Stopping throughout the day to take note of what you appreciate is one of many tools that can help you create a healthier, happier brain. What’s really exciting is that science has shown that it takes as little as 10-seconds to begin the process of breaking down old neural networks and replacing them with new ones; something that all of us can do.

This week, I encourage you to practice taking in the Good by stopping to notice what you appreciate – in your surroundings, your relationships, in the food you eat, the support and acknowledgement you receive – the list is endless. Then, close your eyes and soak in the good feelings for 10 to 20 seconds. Building on this practice, over time, can help you transform your negativity bias into a healthier, happier you.

With love, Theresa

And now, in keeping with the theme of love, on to this month’s blog, “Treat Yourself to Love.”

Treat Yourself To Love

“Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.” – Lao Tzu

dating make you shudder or retreat to your coach to watch reruns of your favorite TV show?

We all desire love. It’s as natural as breathing. We were born to thrive and loving is a necessary component. But we often shelter ourselves and hold back from taking the risk that would lead us to greater happiness and fulfillment.

If you’ve been hiding out, it’s time to try something new and expand your horizons. Here are seven tools, which act like seeds, to help you sprout new roots and blossom:

  1. When looking for true love, the first step in the process is learning to love yourself. Appreciate who you are and honor your gifts and talents. You will become magnetic and attract people who resonate on your level. You will also be inclined to select a partner who respects and treats you well.
  1. Having a partner with similar interests in essential for a thriving relationship. Take note of the activities that bring you joy and are important for you to share. The list will help you choose someone with whom you are well suited.
  1. Are you clam and patient? Energetic and active? Quiet and Reflective? Choosing a partner with a similar temperament will improve your ability to understand and relate to each other.
  1. Brainstorm a list of qualities you want in a partner to ensure a fulfilling relationship Then, prioritize your list and pick the top 10 attributes as your “must have’s.” Kindness, generosity and good communication are three potential examples.
  1. Do the same for characteristics that turn  you off and are top 10 deal-breakers. Swearing, addictions and self-centeredness are three possible examples.
  1. Review your list of interests and choose something you’ve wanted to do, but have been afraid to try, and do it. Pick something small enough to get you started, but big enough to stretch you, than build on your success. Doing what you love provides opportunities to meet others who share mutual interests.
  1. Have fun with the process and don’t be attached to outcomes.

Wishing you a love-filled journey!
Theresa

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Forgiveness: Moving From Darkness To Light   Leave a comment

Preamble

Forgiveness is a powerful practice.  As we let go of resentments, and the people we feel have hurt us, or caused harm to those we love, our lives are transformed as we free ourselves to receive a greater flow of love, joy, health and abundance.

This week’s TNT provides a three-step process to help you let go of the past and open your heart.

If you are on my email list, don’t forget to keep your eyes out on Sunday, February 14, for this week’s blog, and my special Valentine’s Day treat!

With love,

Theresa

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Forgiveness: Moving From Darkness To Light

“Forgiveness is the key to happiness.”

– A Course in Miracles, Lesson 121

As I was contemplating this week’s TNT, the practice of forgiveness came to mind. I’ve written on the topic several times, as it’s a key ingredient for happiness. As I sat at my desk, I felt compelled to share on it again.

I once heard Marianne Williamson, who lectures on A Course in Miracles say, “resentments are like a thin slice of hate.” Although I heard the quote over 20 years ago, the image made such an impression that it continues to stay with me.

Having worked in the healing field for more than 30 years, I am well aware, from my own processes, and those of my clients, that the body responds to resentments like a tight rope around one’s neck. They off our circulation and limit the flow of Life’s Good into our experience. Forgiveness is often confused with condoning someone’s behavior. Nothing is further from the truth. Forgiveness is a practice we do to free ourselves, and in so doing, our health and well-being are subject to improve.

Feelings of animosity can be hard to admit, let alone, sit with. However, the first step in releasing resentments is honesty. Like casting light onto darkness, it is imperative to acknowledge whatever feelings are lurking beneath the surface before we feel a sense of relief and freedom. While it is not necessary to share your feelings with others, being honest with yourself is crucial.

This 3-Step Process will help you to let go of the past and open your heart.

Like any practice, you may need to repeat it multiple times before you feel complete.

Before you begin, I invite you to set the tone by powering down your phone, lighting a candle, and creating a space that feels safe and inviting. Next, take a few deep breaths and envision yourself embraced in a warm and loving light. Know that you are safe and cared for. Then follow the outline below.

Step 1: Begin by asking yourself the following question. You can write it in your journal or, if you prefer, speak and answer it aloud. Choose whichever method feels most comfortable.

“Who do I need to forgive and why?”

Step 2: Trust your intuition and go with the first person or situation that comes to mind. It may be an individual, a political group, a government or an organization. Then, state what you forgive them for. Be sure to be specific. Use the following sentence as your model:

The person I need to forgive is _________.  I forgive you for___________.

You may feel multiple resentments for the same person. If so, repeat the sentence until you feel complete. Allow yourself to sit with any feelings that may emerge in the process. Like toxins stored in the body, the anger, disappointment or sadness needs to be released.

Step 3: When you feel ready, complete the process by saying the following statement or create one of your own that helps you release the situation and let go:

(State the person’s name)_____________, I now bless you and release you to your Highest Good and I am freed to mine. (Add anything else that you feel guided to say.)

As you complete the practice, notice how you feel in your body. Let that be the key that informs your future actions.

As always, I would love to hear your comments and the results of the exercise, should you choose to use it.

With love,

Theresa
