Gratitude: Growing Happiness Inside of You & Our “Beautiful Pathways” Nature Walk   Leave a comment

Gratitude is literally one of the few things that can measurably change people’s lives.” – Bob Emmons, Ph.D.

I recently had the opportunity to listen to an interview with Bob Emmons, Ph.D. – a leading authority on gratitude and author of Gratitude Works, who spoke on the benefits of gratitude. The interview was part of a year long training program I am attending in the application of positive neuroplasticity  with Dr. Rick Hanson.

While gratitude has often been thought of as a touchy-feeling spiritual practice, with perhaps little to no practical implications, gratitude, in fact, has been scientifically proven to have multiple physical, psychological and social benefits. Here are just a few:

Research has shown that adults who practice gratitude on a regular basis experience the following benefits:

Physical

  • Exercise more regularly and take better care of their health
  • Report fewer illness symptoms
  • Have stronger immune systems
  • Are less bothered by aches and pains
  • Have lower blood pressure
  • Respond more effectively to daily stressors, and may show increased resilience when confronted with trauma induced stress
  • Sleep an average of 30-minutes longer each night and wake feeling more alive and vital

Psychological

  • Have higher levels of positive emotions, such as joy, enthusiasm and love
  • Are protected from envy, greed, resentment and bitterness
  • Are more alert, alive and awake
  • Feel more optimistic and happier
  • Have fewer toxic negative emotions
  • Can experience a decrease in the duration and frequency of depression
  • Have a higher sense of self-worth

Social

  • Are more helpful, generous and compassionate
  • Feel more loving, joyful, forgiving and enthusiastic
  • Are more outgoing
  • Have improved relationships
  • Have increased feelings of connectedness, and even altruism
  • Experience increased social support

THIS WEEK’S TIP ‘N TOOL

PRACTICE: GROWING HAPPINESS THROUGH GRATITUDE

People who kept a gratitude journal once a week for 10-weeks reported a 25% increase in happiness. So…

This week you can begin your gratitude practice by starting a gratitude journal.

For instance, you might like to purchase a journal or notebook that appeals to you, and that brings a sense of pleasure to look at and write in.

Then, once a week (or more often, if you like), write five things your grateful for.

As an extra boost, at the beginning or end of every day, spend a little quiet time reflecting on the “good facts” in your life.

For instance, the comfortable bed you’re lying on, the sun shining through your window, the warmth (or coolness) of the air on your skin, etc.  (I like to do this in the evening, while lying in bed, just prior to sleeping.)

Then, soak in the good feelings that arise as you reflect on what you’ve written in your gratitude journal and as you review the good facts in your life at the beginning or end of the day.

The practice of “soaking in the good” is an important step and will help to tilt your brain in the direction of happiness and positivity.

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Focus on the Positive   Leave a comment

We all experience discouragement from time to time. The key, when in the midst of challenge, is learning to focus on the positive.

“If you keep saying things are going to be bad, you have a good chance of being a prophet.” – Isaac Bashevis Singer

It’s easy to feel frustrated when things don’t go our way, or take longer than we wish. We may become discouraged, and think that what we long for will never come to pass. Over time, if we don’t change the course of our thinking, the things we tell ourselves will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

If you would like a different outcome, and one that leads to your success, tell a different story, and shift your focus to your wins.

THIS WEEK’S TNT

Keep a journal of all that’s going well.

At the end of every day, add a daily entry.

It will help to change your focus and increase your happiness and energy.

Need some ideas? Here are a few to get you started:

You:

Caught an early bus, and made it to work on time!

Saw a friend you hadn’t seen in a while and enjoyed a lovely visit.

You saw a job posting in your field of interest, and filled out an application.

The sun was shining!

You took loving care of your body, and ate a nourishing meal.

You spoke up for yourself at a meeting.

Your car started!

Get the idea?

Experiment!

Try it for a month. Then, notice any changes in your outlook and your life.

It doesn’t matter how large or small the good things you notice are.

The benefits are yours to enjoy, and will come with daily practice.

With love, Theresa

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Just Say “No”   Leave a comment

“Although it may feel uncomfortable to think about saying no, it’s important to remember that each time you say yes to someone, or something else, you say no to you and your priorities.” – Oprah Winfrey

We want to be kind. We want to be loved. We want to give because it feels good, and we want to be generous with our gifts, talents, abilities and time. But how often do we say “yes” to requests from friends, colleagues, family members, and others, when we know, within our heart of hearts, that it means taking time away from caring for ourselves?

Saying “no” can conjure up feelings of guilt and shame, because we may think it’s self-centered, and be afraid that others may judge us. But people learn how to treat us by how we treat ourselves.

Giving and receiving is an art of balance. But how can we achieve it? Change begins with awareness. Are you aware of how often you say “yes” when you would rather say “no?” The answer may surprise you!

THIS WEEK’S TNT

This week, make not of how many times you say “yes,” when you would rather say “no.”

Keep a record in a small notebook or make a list on your phone.

Notice how you feel when you say “yes” to something you don’t want to do.

Do you feel resentful, angry, frustrated, stressed, or exhausted?

Your body is giving you clues!

At the end of the week, add up the number of entries in your notebook.

Then,  make a list of five things you would like to say “no” to.

Start with something small.

You don’t need to explain or justify yourself.

Don’t know what to say?

Here’s a rule of thumb you can follow:

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don’t say it mean.

Learning to say “no” takes practice. But you can learn how to say it.

The more you practice, the easier it will become.

You will feel better, and while some relationships may fall away, others will deepen and grow.

As always, I would love to hear your comments about how this week’s TNT worked for you and what it is you discovered.

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life   Leave a comment

“Every thought you have makes up some segment of the world you see. It is with your thoughts then, that we must work, if your perception of the world is to be changed.” – A Course In Miracles, Lesson 23

How would your life be different if you changed your thoughts and the words you use?

Whether we know it or not, our words have power and what we give our attention to grows.

I heard a TEDx Talk by Carolyn Myss a while back entitled “Choices That Can Change Your Life.”  My biggest take-away was giving away one word from my vocabulary and never using it again. The word that immediately came to mind was “can’t.” gave it away several months ago, and have rarely used it since.***

We often hold ourselves back from the lives we want without realizing we’re doing it. Our words, and the strategies we use for coping with the world around us, may keep us living smaller than we desire. We may think the worst will happen if we pursue our dreams and goals and settle for what we have rather than embrace what it is we want. Our perceptions are often based on past experiences or conditioning, which has nothing to do with living in the present moment.

Since I’ve given up (or at least reduced!) the word “can’t” from my vernacular, I’ve noticed how my life is expanding and how I’ve become more bold. Like everything, it is a work in progress, as life continues to unfold.

Our words, thoughts, and behaviors are intimately connected. The more conscious we become of what we say and do, the more freedom we have to choose.

Want more love, joy, and abundance in your life? Try out this week’s TNT!

THIS WEEK’S TNT

Pick a day to pay attention to the words you commonly use.

Notice the effect they have on your behavior.

For instance, if you tell yourself you “can’t,” how does it limit you, and what effect does it have on your life?

When you have completed your observation, choose one word to give away for the remainder of the month.

What changes do you notice?

Have fun with it!

Remember, it’s progress not perfection!

As always, I would love to hear your comments about how this week’s TNT worked for you and what it is you discovered.

With love, Theresa

***You can imagine giving your word away to a trusted friend who will take and transform it, or imagine placing it in a pink bubble and releasing it, or whatever else feels right.

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool): It’s Okay   Leave a comment

“When you finally accept that it’s okay not to have answers, and it’s okay not to be perfect, you realize that feeling confused is a normal part of what it is to be human.”  – Winona Ryder

It’s okay to feel how we feel.

It’s okay if you feel afraid.

It’s okay if you feel lonely.

It’s okay if you feel frustrated.

It’s okay if you feel angry.

It’s okay if you feel resentful.

It’s okay if you feel like things aren’t working out the way you planned.

It’s okay…

When we accept, rather than resist, how we feel,  we make room for the feelings to shift, and for peace and balance to follow.

THIS WEEK’S TNT:

When you are feeling upset or tense, notice the sensations in your body.

Do you have a headache?

Are you experiencing pain in your neck, back, or shoulders?

Do your muscles feel tight?

Are you clenching your jaw?

Does your stomach hurt?

Are you experiencing other physical or emotional symptoms?

Take a deep breath and acknowledge your feelings.

It’s the first step on your path to recovery.

Acknowledging your feelings will help you reconnect to yourself, and allow solutions to follow.

As always, I would love to hear your comments about how this week’s TNT worked for you and what it is you discovered.

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Affirmations: The Power of Our Words   Leave a comment

“The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude.” – Oprah Winfrey

Although we may be accustomed to thinking that our minds and bodies are separate entities, the truth is that they are intimately connected and have an effect on our behaviors and our experience of the world.

For instance, let’s say you have a conflict with a co-worker or family member and are uncomfortable addressing it.  Here’s how the scenario might go:

Thought: I am afraid of conflict.

Feeling: Fear, anxiety, resentment

Behavior: Avoidance, aggression

Physical response: Shallow breathing, stomach pain, tight muscles

When we change our thinking, we change how we feel about the situation or person, which then alters our behavior and how we physically feel.

In my workshop, Developing a New Relationship with Your Body, I facilitate a kinesiology exercise that proves the point.  I ask a volunteer to come to the front of the room and extend their dominant arm in a horizontal position. I then ask them to resist my pressure as I press down on their wrist and test their strength. They always test quite strong.

Next, I ask them to close their eyes and repeat the phrase “I am weak and helpless” 10 times. (I always do the counting!) When done, I ask them to extend the same arm and I retest their strength. The volunteers’ arms, without fail, become weak and fall limply by their sides. The class is always quite astonished.

In the final phase of the exercise, I ask the volunteers to repeat the statement “I am strong and powerful” 10 times, with eyes closed, and instruct them to soak in the good feelings. I then retest their strength. It sometimes takes volunteers a few tries to regain their original strength (such is the power of our negativity bias), but they always do, and often feel much stronger then they did at the beginning of the demonstration.

Affirmations are a powerful way to change our mindsets and improve our lives.  In my upcoming book, “Alphabet Affirmations: Transform Your Live and Love Yourself,” I provide 78 empowering affirmations to help you create a more joyful and healthy life. Pre-orders are coming soon!

In the meantime, try the following experiment:

THIS WEEK’S TNT

Pick a day to pay attention to your thinking.

Make note of your dominant thoughts.

Notice how you feel.

Choose one thought that diminishes your sense of well-being.

Write an affirmative statement to refocus your thinking.

Soak in the good feelings.

Notice any difference.

Use the affirmation as often as needed.

As always, I would love to hear your comments.

With love,

Theresa

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Be Bold   Leave a comment

“Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.” – Goethe

The term “bold” still scares the bejesus out of me – or at least the part of me that’s afraid of being eaten by tigers! And…the little kid in me who feels afraid of the unknown and wants to feel protected and safe. But that’s not who I am. The former dates back to prehistoric times and is no longer valid. The later stems from childhood and is the part of me that needs comfort and soothing. If you have similar feelings about the word “bold,” the same may be true for you.

Who we are is often more than we give ourselves permission to live up to. Change involves risk – after all, one never knows the future – or the results of the actions we take. Our primary goal is to follow our inner calling and act with confidence and faith (or act as if we have them!), as we take a breath and begin moving forward.

A question I have found helpful for myself, and often ask clients who are unhappy or dissatisfied with their current life experience is:

“What will you regret not having done when you’re lying on your death bed?”

The answer is readily apparent, when we are open to listening. And when we don’t, we will feel out of balance, and may experience depression and physical symptoms.

For me, it meant letting go of my home in New York, selling my belongings, leaving family and friends, and fulfilling my dream of relocating to Italy; re-establishing close and healthy relationships with my family; and, using my gifts and talents to be of greater service in the world. Goethe’s quote is accurate – my life is expanding and my dreams have, and are, coming true. And yours can, too.

It takes guts to move our dreams into action. But that’s what leads to greater happiness, fulfillment and magic. Are you ready to begin?

THIS WEEK’S TNT

Ask yourself:

“What will I regret not having done at the end of my lifetime?”

Write your answer down and place it where you can easily see it.

Reflect on it daily.

Make a list of what it would take to accomplish.

Create an action plan to realize it.

Take the first step and open to the magic.

You’ll know you’re on track when the energy starts flowing.

If you get stuck, reach out to friends, professionals, and colleagues you know will support you.

As always, I would love to hear your comments.

With love,

Theresa

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Compassion   Leave a comment

“Love and compassion are necessities not luxuries.  Without them humanity cannot survive.” – Dalai Lama

I have been using a deck of Angel Cards designed by Joy Drake and Kathy Tyler as part of my morning meditation since the mid 1980’s, when I was introduced to them at my first Reiki gathering at Breitenbush  Hot Springs in Oregon. Last Friday, I choose the Angel of Compassion. I had just experienced a misunderstanding with a friend and presumed the card was meant for us. So I thought of him, and then myself, and sent us each some love.

I was in Rovinj, Croatia at the time, on a short vacation, and had been eating at a restaurant that served a healthy breakfast and was removed from the throngs of tourists. But on this particular day, I wanted to sit by the water and decided to try a new cafe. As I finished my breakfast, and took my supplements, I happened to look behind me and saw a man sitting alone, who asked if I was taking medication. I said “no,” and explained they were vitamins, and part of my health routine. We then struck up a conversation. I learned that he was from Belgium and that his wife had died two months ago. He explained that they used to go to Rovinj for their annual vacation. He said he wasn’t sure what he was doing there or if he made the right choice in coming. He then begin to cry. I thought of the Angel of Compassion and opened my heart. I tried to give him words of comfort and understanding. We talked for some 10 to 15 minutes.

We never know where life is taking us or why we are led to certain places or people. Perhaps there is a higher order prompting us to go where we are most needed or to those who can provide the help we seek.

THIS WEEKS TNT

Notice where you feel compelled to go or with whom to meet or speak with.

Trust your intuition to guide you.

Notice the results.

Your instincts will get stronger the more frequently you listen.

As always, I would love to hear your comments.

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Finding Your Destiny   Leave a comment

Finding your destiny is the ultimate solution in life, because when you’re living as your soul,  you experience unity and subsequent problems and planning for the future  disappear. – Penney Peirce

I love Penny’s quote.

Finding your destiny doesn’t have to be difficult. Nor does it have to be grandiose. It can be as simple as calling someone you’ve been thinking of, which leads to a new connection or information you’ve been looking for; or feeling inspired to begin or complete a project you’ve put on hold, which builds your confidence and culminates in your success; or heeding the impulse to take a new route home, which results in finding the house you’ve been searching for.

While situations like those cited above, may seem insignificant at the time,  each of them provides us with possibilities and blessings that allow our destinies to unfold.

When we follow the soul’s longing, we are led to the next right action, and our lives begin to flow.

This Week’s Tip:

As yourself:  “What wants to happen next?” When the answer aligns with your soul’s purpose, you will feel a sense of openness and peace, and if even for a moment,  any resistance you’ve been experiencing will cease.

If you would like help discovering your next step, it would be my pleasure to speak with you.

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) 3 Sources of Stress and How To Resolve Them   Leave a comment

Preamble

Do you lie awake at night worrying about the day ahead and what’s in store for your future? Living with uncertainty can be frightening and cause undue stress and health issues. This weeks TNT will help you to identify three underlying source of stress and solutions to resolve them.

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool): 3 Sources of Stress and How To Resolve Them

“Every change in the physiological state is accompanied by an appropriate change in the mental-emotional state, conscious or unconscious, and conversely, every change in the mental-emotional state, conscious or unconscious, is accompanied by an appropriate change in the physiological state.” – Elmer Green

Stress comes in two flavors: Eustress, or positive stress, is short term, improves our focus and performance, and brings a sense of joy and fulfillment. It may result from starting a new project or job, taking a long desired trip, or fulfilling a dream or goal. On the other hand, Distress, or negative stress, can be short or long term, stems from fear or worry, can cause insomnia, and lead to anxiety, as well as mental and physical problems.

The following strategies will help you to recognize three sources of stress and solutions to resolve them:

STRESSOR #1:  MENTAL CHATTER

Mental chatter, also known as “The Monkey Mind” occurs when our minds are busy and our thoughts are swinging from one idea to another, without intention or focus. Authorities estimate that we have between 60,000 and 80,000 thoughts per day, and that most of them are repetitive. Research has shown that what we think about has a direct correlation on our mental, emotional and physical health.

SOLUTION:

Take five-minutes at the start of the day to focus and quiet the mind. Examples include guided meditation, breathing exercises, or practices such as Tai Chi, yoga or prayer. As you begin to feel more peaceful, your body and emotions will benefit, your relationships will improve, and your day will go better, as well.

STRESSOR #2:  BELIEFS

Our beliefs are thoughts that have taken root in our consciousness and that may, or may not, be true. They are generally based on past experience and may have little to do with our present situation.

One way to identify a belief is by assessing if what we believe is either “always” or “never” true. Examples of beliefs include “Planes always crash,” “No one hires someone my age,” and “She always complains.”

Our beliefs effect our actions and the outcomes we receive. As a result, we may talk ourselves out of the goals and dreams we desire to achieve.

SOLUTION:

Start by questioning your beliefs and assessing their validity. Ask yourself if the belief you are examining is always or never true, is an assumption, or based on past experience.

If your beliefs are holding you back, check them out by gathering information and seeking advice and support. For instance, if your dream is to travel, and you are afraid of flying, or going alone, check out the statistics for air travel or talk with people who have traveled solo.

STRESSOR #3: GUILT

If you feel uncomfortable being happy when others are suffering, or think you shouldn’t be wealthy because others aren’t, you may be suffering from the obstacle of guilt.  Denying ourselves the Good we desires keep us stuck and does nothing to serve those we worry or are concerned about.

SOLUTION:

Trust that we are each on our own journey, here to heal and grow. Learn to be channel of love, by spreading love everywhere you go. Tune in to your heart, and seek the answer for how to share your greatest treasure. Giving love may come in the form of a smile, lending a helping hand to someone in need, or may be a financial or other gift. One thing is certain, you will feel a sense of joy and fulfillment, as you give from a place of abundance, knowing all is well. Both you and the receiver will enjoy the blessing.

As always, I would love to hear your comments.

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) 5 Ways to Recognize Your Ego and Regain Your Balance. Plus, Special Offer   Leave a comment

Preamble

Do you suffer from fear and anxiety? Or have a hard time getting to sleep at night because you’re too busy worrying? Fear, anxiety and worry are interconnected and share a common thread. In this week’s TNT, you will learn about a spiritual principle to calm your mind and regain your peace and balance. If you would like support on your journey, scroll down to learn about a special savings on a 90-minute Discovery Coaching session.

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) 5 Ways to Recognize Your Ego and Regain Your Balance

“There is a healer in you, rooted in and always connected to your spirit. To know this healer and make it work in your life you must (once again) get your ego out of the way.” – Wayne W. Dyer

The ego can be persnickety. Masking itself as wisdom, truth, and intelligence, it often pulls us off our path and creates unnecessary anxiety. While it’s important to make informed decisions, holding ourselves back from the changes we wish to make is another story!

As you read the list below, make note of the ones you relate to:

  1. Do you find yourself worrying about the future?
  2. Have difficulty making decisions because you’re afraid of making a mistake?
  3. Would like to make a change in your personal or professional life, but procrastinate?
  4. Do you tell yourself you don’t have the skills or resources to pursue your goals and dreams?
  5. Do you wake up in the morning feeling depressed or dreading the day?

If you checked one or more of the above, your ego is getting in the way!

Fear, worry, stress, and other low frequency emotions, zap our energy, affect our health, and are rooted in the ego – or what Buddhists call “the little mind” – which projects doom and gloom into the future and prevents us from living our best lives. And the more fearful we become, the more we condition our minds to believe our projections are real.

I had an epiphany yesterday when I realized I had been feeling overly anxious about a change I’ve been wanting to make. Then, as if the gods waved a magic wand while I was meditating, I recalled this beautiful principle from Dr. Mikao Usui, an enlightened master who discovered the healing art of Reiki.

The principle below is one of five spiritual precepts I learned during my First Degree Reiki Training in 1984, while living in Seattle.  I felt an immediate sense of relief as I repeated the words; the worry vanished, and I felt a deep sense of peace, joy, and happiness.  I was living in the present.

The precept serves as a guide for living. Open your heart and try it.

“Just for today, I will not worry.”

If you would like to feel more peaceful and create a brighter future, it would be my pleasure to work with you.

I invite you to take advantage of this month’s special offer: A 39% savings on a 90-minute Discovery Session. Please see the details below.***

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) I Am a Center of Peace   Leave a comment

Dear Friends,

Regardless of where we are in our lives, we’re likely to experience times of stress and need some gentle reminders to let go of our angst and re center ourselves.

I created a lovely affirmation as a handout for participants in my stress management workshops.  It’s short and sweet and hope you’ll find it helpful.

1.  Begin by taking a couple of  breaths, letting go of of any tension, as you bring yourself into the present moment.

2.  When you’re ready, take another breath and as you inhale silently repeat the affirmation, “I Am a Center of Peace.” Feel yourself relax as you breathe out any stress or painful sensations.

3.  Continue breathing, silently repeating the affirmation as you let go of any remaining tension. Notice the sense of peace that fills your body, as you feel the sensation to expand from head to toe.

4.  Repeat the process until you feel peaceful and relaxed.

5.  When you’re ready, take a cleansing breath, and return to the room, refreshed.

As an added benfit, you might like to print the photo below*** and hang it where you can see it, as reminder to stop and take a breath.

And for those of you living in the U.S., wishing you a fun and wonderful holiday weekend!

With love,
Theresa

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool): Change Your Thinking, Change Your Brain   Leave a comment

Dear Friends,

Did you know you could increase your sense of happiness by focusing on experiences, in the past or present, that brought or bring you pleasure?

Experts estimate that we have between 60,000 and 80,000 thoughts per day, and most of them are repetitive! You’ve likely heard the phrase “what you focus on grows.” Research now tells us the science behind it is accurate.

Neurons that fire together wire together. In layman’s terms (which I’m still learning!) means that our repetitive thoughts strengthen the neural pathways in our brains, and the beliefs and behaviors that accompany them. The good news is, as we change our thinking, we have the ability to change the hardwiring in our brains.

For instance, science has shown that focusing on positive experiences for as little as 10-20 seconds increases our happiness and improves our health and well-being; things we may have known instinctively, and which researchers are now documenting.

This week, dedicate a few minutes throughout the day to reflect on pleasurable experiences – past or present – and soak in the good feelings for 10 to 20 seconds. Then take a moment to notice any changes to your energy or mood.

As you continue to practice, noticing positive moments will become natural, and help you to create a happier, healthier, more fulfilling life!

Give it a try! It might brighten your day!

As always, I would love to hear from you. Drop a note to let me know it goes!

With love,

Theresa

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) How To Calm The Mind and Relieve Overthinking   2 comments

Preamble

Does overthinking complicate your life or lead you astray? This week’s TNT will help get you on track!

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) How To Calm The  Mind and Relieve Overthinking

“Before enlightenment chop wood, carry water.

After enlightenment chop wood, carry water.” – Zen Proverb

I was talking with a friend today – we were obsessing about our fears (yes, I have them, too!), phobias and how much there is to do. Then, it dawned on me: When life seems complicated, and feels unmanageable, it may stem from overthinking!

It’s essential to have visions and goals and timelines in which to achieve them. They give our lives a sense of meaning and purpose and are important to our health and well-being. However, no matter how far we’ve come, fear and doubt can get in the way and lead to overthinking. (Can you relate?)

When your head is spinning, and you’re trying to figure things out, it’s time to stop and slow down the momentum. Go for a walk. Have a cup of tea. Detach and let the feelings settle. It will help you calm your mind, redirect your thoughts, and relieve your overthinking. You will regain your composure, feel refreshed and in the long run, be more efficient.

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Are You Moving In The Right Direction?   Leave a comment

Preamble

I had an interesting experience while riding on the elevator at New York University yesterday, which provided a great metaphor when seeking guidance and direction!

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool): Are You Moving In The Right Direction?

“A thousand mile journey begins with the first step.” – Lao-Tzu

I had an interesting experience while taking the elevator down to the lobby after a doctor’s appointment at New York University yesterday. Another woman and I had hopped on on the 9th floor and began chatting. The elevator stopped a few seconds later, and for some reason, we thought we had gone up instead of down. Although the sign on the elevator indicated we were now on the 8th floor, it took us both a few seconds to realize we were going in the right direction! What a great metaphor!

The next time life throws you a curveball, or you wonder if you’re going in the right direction, don’t give up too soon! Be open to the possibility that you may be right on course. Things aren’t always as they appear.

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Appreciation: A Tool To Rewire Your Brain For Happiness   Leave a comment

Preamble

Much as been said about the power of gratitude and appreciation. That what we focus on, grows. The field of neuroscience is documenting what sages have known for millennia. Today’s TNT focuses on the art of appreciation – a tool that can help you shift from a negative state of mind to one that’s more satisfying and vibrant.

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Appreciation: A Tool To Rewire Your Brain For Happiness

“Neurons that fire together wire together.”  – Donald Hebb

The quote above was first used in 1949 by Donald Hebb, a Canadian neuropsychologist known for his work in the field of associative learning, and has become a common phrase among neuroscientists. Hebb’s axiom reminds us that every experience, thought, feeling, and physical sensation triggers thousands of neurons, which form a neural network. What’s cool about this, is that we now know how to transform our ‘negativity bias” (a survival skill we developed eons ago) in to a more positive state of mind. Science calls this a “positivity bias.”

By focusing on what we appreciate, we have the power and the ability to rewire our brains for happiness. Stopping throughout the day to take note of what you appreciate is one of many tools that can help you create a healthier, happier brain. What’s really exciting is that science has shown that it takes as little as 10-seconds to begin the process of breaking down old neural networks and replacing them with new ones; something that all of us can do.

This week, I encourage you to practice taking in the Good by stopping to notice what you appreciate – in your surroundings, your relationships, in the food you eat, the support and acknowledgement you receive – the list is endless. Then, close your eyes and soak in the good feelings for 10 to 20 seconds. Building on this practice, over time, can help you transform your negativity bias into a healthier, happier you.

With love, Theresa

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool): Intention or Attachment?   Leave a comment

Preamble

I’ve been reading a wonderful book, entitled  Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself, by Dr. Joe Dispensa, a chiropractor who received post graduate training in neurology, neuroscince, brain function and cellular biology.

I first met Dr. Joe, as he’s affectionately known, in Munich, Germany, while attenting a conference on Reconnective Healing. Dr. Joe was one of the presenters. His quote about surrender popped out at me while riding the subway this morning. As always, it was such a great reminder! You can read it in the TNT below.

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Intention or Attachment?

“The universial intelligence that animates the existence of all things will both surprise and delight you.”

– Dr. Joe Dispensa

We are all familiar with setting intentions – the vision of what we wish our lives to be.

While studying to be a Practitioner at the Center of Spiritual Living, I learned the power of Affirmative Prayer and the process of visioning: We name what we want, we embody it on a feeling level, and release it. When we are in alignment with what we want, on a thinking and feeling level, this three-step process can work miracles in our lives. I’ve seen the power of affirmative prayer in my life, and in the lives of my clients and friends.

If you haven’t experienced the art of deliberate creation, you may not be on a vibrational level equipment to what you want and/or may be attached to the outcome of how you want the universe’s response to appear.  The later is a dream killer.

In his book, Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself, Dr. Joe Dispensa has this to say:

“You can’t both surrender and try to control the outcome. Surrender requires that you give up what you think you know from your limited mind, especially your belief about how this problem in your life should be taken care of.  To truly surrender is to let go of the ego’s control; trust in an outcome that you haven’t thought of yet; and allow this all-knowing, loving intelligence to take over and provide the best solution for you. You  must come to the understanding that this invisible power is real, fully conscious of you, and can completely take care of any aspect of the personality. When you do, it will organize your life in a way that is just right for you.”

The last sentence is a tenet of both Reconnective Healing and Affirmative Prayer. In Reconnective Healing, we show up, ready and willing to observe our experience and let the Universe design the healing that’s right for us; in Affirmative Prayer, we declare what we want, and let go of the how. It’s all a part of letting go and surrendering.

The next time you envision, or pray for something you want, – a physical healing, a relationship, or financial abundance, imagine yourself opening to the Universe responding in a way that’s different than you think.

With love, Theresa

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) Maybe So, Maybe Not

I facilitated a stress management program for the American Red Cross a few months following 9/11. The program focused on teaching participants mind-body techniques to help manage their stress and begin to gently move forward with their lives.

At the end of the workshop a lovely man, who I will call Bob, came up to speak with me. He had been working for the New York City Fire Department, and had resigned his post as a firefighter shortly before the attack on the World Trade Center. When he saw news of the event on CNN, he threw his old Engine House T-shirt on and ran downtown to help. He was running toward Twin Tower Two to join his fellow firefighers, when he stopped to help a man struggling to manage a fire hose. The delay literally saved Bob’s life, as minutes later, the building collapsed, with his buddies inside.

We’ve all heard stories of people who’ve avoided tragedies because of a delay, whether it was missing a flight, being late for work, or taking a wrong turn off the freeway, and thereby avoiding an accident. And of others, who have experienced a success, because their original plans fell through and hadn’t worked out. We can never see the entire story – we can only view the chapter that we’re currently living.

Should you feel frustrated with plans that have seemingly gone awry, and think things may not be working out in your favor, remember this famous Buddhist saying, “Maybe So, Maybe Not.” The block you are experiencing may be a blessing in disguise.
With love,
Theresa

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) How To Resolve Your Conflicts And Get On With Your Life   Leave a comment

Preamble

Conflict can be tricky. We want peace in our relationships, but what price are we willing to pay? Being true to who we are is a crucial element for maintaining our health and the integrity of our relationships. Today’s TNT provides 10 tips to help you resolve your conflicts, so you can let go of resentments and move on with your life.

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool) How To Resolve Your Conflicts And Get On With Your Life

“If you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it.” – W. Somerset Maugham

Addressing conflict can be scary and elicit feelings of doubt and insecurity. We may be afraid of damaging our relationships if we say what we truly think and how we feel.  However, when we are truly present and honest, we provide an opportunity for our for relationships to deepen and flourish.  Knowing how and when to express ourselves creates a foundation of confidence on which we can stand.

Here are 10 tips that will help you resolve conflict, let go of resentments, and get on with your life

      1. Be Direct.  Speaking directly to the person involved, rather than complaining to friends, may feel frightening, but is the first step in the process of clearing the air and resolving conflict. Being direct will also help you feel empowered as you learn to assert yourself.

     2.  Timing. Plan to talk to the person at a mutually agreed upon time. Talking when tired,  in a hurry, or in the midst of other activities will sabotage, rather than support, your conversation. Let the person know you have something on your mind you would like to talk about and decide on a convenient time. Let them know they’re not in any trouble, which will help to relieve any fear or apprehension.  (Resolving conflict isn’t about blame – it’s about sharing your feelings and experience.)

     3.  Plan Ahead. Think about what you want to say and how you want to say it.  Focus on the issue at hand and how it affects you.  Stay away from blame and judgment. Practice in the mirror, or with your coach or therapist, if needed.

     4.  Be Conversational Rather Than Confrontational: Ridiculing, blaming or antagonizing severs communication and makes it difficult for the person involved to hear you. State the facts and how it the situation affects you.  Speak slowing in short sentences, rather than telling a story.  (See Step #5 for an example.)

     5.  Provide Information. Providing information, and how the situation affects you, will help prevent an argument and keep the conversation focused on the facts. For example, instead of saying “You have no consideration. You always slam the door in the morning and wake me up” say “When you slam the door on your way out of the house in the morning, it wakes me up and I have a hard time getting back to sleep.” See the difference?

     6.  Be Prepared To Listen. Take a breath and listen to the person’s response. Stay calm, should they feel defensive or be on hyper alert. (After all, they may not have the same tools as you do.)

     7.  Be An Active Listener. Paraphrase what you’re hearing them say. They will need time to talk as much as you do in order to resolve the problem. Give them space to air their thoughts and feelings.  When you show that you’re listening, it will break down the barriers to talking and help them better hear you.  Other strategies including noding your head up and down (not side to side!) to show you understand (not necessarily agree) with what they’re saying. Use phrases, such as Mh hmmm” and “I see. When the person is done talking and feels complete, let them know you appreciate their willingness to discuss the situation.

     8.  Talk It Through And Stay Focused On The Issue.  Feel free to continue the conversation, should there be something more you would like to say when the person has finished talking. Like cleaning a wound, it’s important to address the situation in its entirety so it can be clearly resolved. This will help to prevent any resentment or anger from festering.  Be mindful, however, that this isn’t about dumping issues from the past 10 years. Doing so would be overwhelming and the person would likely feel blamed and defensive. Stay focused on the current issue.

     9.  Collaborate. Once you have each had an opportunity to empty out your feelings and express yourself, collaborate on a mutually agreed upon solution. This can be a bit like brainstorming – throwing out ideas and options until you come up with a plan with which you’re both comfortable.

     10.  Test It Out.  Agree to follow up at a designated time to see how the solution is working. Be opened to creating an alternate solution or tweaking the one you have.

Good luck! And, as always, I would love to hear your comments. Just click on the “Leave A Comment Tab” at the top of the page.

With love,

Theresa

Theresa’s TNT (Tip ‘N Tool): Create More Time To The Things You Love   Leave a comment

As a Reconnective Healer and Life Coach, three things I often hear people talk about are their needs for more energy, time and sleep. Do you resonate?

One way to increase your energy is by letting go of what drains you. Ironically, we often turn to those very things – TV, food, sugar, alcohol, (can you name a few others?) to give us a boost or to help us relax. Hmmm….time for a dose of more effective medicine!

This simple change may not be easy, but it will help to improve your energy, brighten your mood and create more time to do the things that are important to you, but first, you must be willing to get off the couch! Ready? Take a breath! Here it comes! Can you guess?

Remove the Tube!

You might be ahead of me on this one. I have to admit, I am sucker for TV. I like watching the News Hour and have a few favorite shows (no, not all on PBS!). If you have resistance to removing your tube, or aren’t sure what you’ll replace it with, here’s a little story to encourage you!

Some years ago, I took a 12-week course called The 4 T Prosperity Program (Tithe Your Time, Talents and Treasure); a spiritual class created by Stretton Smith to help his students create greater joy and prosperity in their lives. I took the course at Sacred Center with August Gold, the church’s minister, who insisted on adding a little something extra of her own to the syllabus: a 12-week requirement to “turn the volume down,” by reducing our exposure to the news, and  unplugging the television. Whew! The resistance in the room was palpable!  After all, what would one do to relax and “tune out?”

Although I cheated to watch the Obama-Clinton debates (the class took place during the primaries), I stepped up and met the challenge! Much to my delight, I noticed several unexpected changes: I slept better (no late night TV interfering with my dream time!), felt happier when I woke, began a photo project I had been neglecting, and made connections with friends I hadn’t previously had time for. In essence, my life began to improve.  And yours can, too!

You may not be ready to remove the tube permanently, but why not experiment for the next week or two? Try replacing your viewing time with something more fun and satisfying. Like that class you’ve been meaning to take, the book you’ve been wanting to read, the project that’s been sitting on your shelf, or an activity that would increase your sense of joy and prosperity. And remember, prosperity isn’t just about money!

To join in the experiment, click on “Comments,” located next to the blog title, and let me know what you choose to substitute in place of the tube, then come back next week to share your results.

As always, I would love to hear your comments.
